Location, location, location

In 1849, surveyors from the Canterbury Association in England saw, for
the first time, the land that would be chosen as the site of the city of
Christchurch. In typical pioneer fashion, the clearing of the land to make
it suitable for farming had been undertaken by just two men (the Deans
brothers); as a result of their labours, from swamp and sandhills came
the city we know today as Christchurch, the oldest established city in
New Zealand.
And what a city it’s become! It’s now the second largest city by
population in New Zealand, yet it retains the feel and character of a
town. Some would say an English town, as the architecture of many civic
buildings and, in particular, the University, is based on the Gothic Revival
style. To heighten the impression, the River Avon winds gently through
the centre, and, at last count, there were 748 parks and gardens within
the city boundaries.
There are cities that lose their identities as they grow, but Christchurch
is not one of them. The centre is still focused around the arts, culture,
leisure activities and education. A dedicated team of conservationists
maintain the older buildings in prime condition, the parks and gardens
are tended with a care that displays a genuine pride in their appearance,
and the river is used for recreation of the gentler kind.
Yet, with this as a backdrop, you can choose from French, Thai,
Japanese, Chinese or Italian restaurants, take advantage of some legendary
(and more about-to-become-legendary) South Island wines, walk just
about anywhere you need to go, and order a custom-made kite. And,
within half an hour’s drive of the centre, you can visit more than a dozen
renowned wineries, be on the beach at Sumner, go paragliding or go
horse riding at Bottle Lake Forest Park.
This is the site we’ve chosen for Salisbury Park; a location that gives
you access to all the advantages of living in a compact, beautiful, historic
city, at a price that definitely gives the impression of investing at the right time.
